There are a number of Book Links events coming up in July for both young people and the general public.

Young Writers Workshop

This is a workshop on writing short stories which can later be entered into the
Story Links short story competition for young writers.
It will be delivered by author Dimity Powell.

Dimity Powell loves filling every spare moment with words. She writes and reviews exclusively for children and is the Managing Editor for Kids’ Book Review. Dimity has published over 28 stories but believes picture books are food for the soul, consuming them regularly and relishes creating her own including The Fix-It Man, (2017), At the End of Holyrood Lane, (2018) both with illustrator, Nicky Johnston and, Pippa, due July 2019. Dimity is also a tutor for the Write Like and Author Program.

Young Illustrators Workshop

Remy Lai studied fine arts, with a major in painting and drawing. She was born in Indonesia, grew up in Singapore, and currently lives in Brisbane, Australia, where she writes and draws stories for kids with her two dogs by her side. Pie in the Sky is her debut middle-grade novel and comes out in June 2019. This is a graphic novel so if you want to learn more about comic style illustration, this is the workshop for you.

The Workshop

Do you love drawing?  Would you like to learn what an illustrator does? If you have booked in to the short story writing workshop in the morning, bring your story with you to illustrate.   Get ready to draw lots and learn!

What you need to bring:

– a story that you would like to illustrate
– drawing materials : pencils, black felt-tip marker, eraser, sharpener
– drawing paper/photocopy paper (We’ll have some of this as back up)

Join Mia Macrossan in conversation with WA based author A J Betts, author of Zac and Mia, Hive and Rogue coming out June 2019.

A.J. Betts is an author, speaker, teacher and cyclist. Her latest novel HIVE (Pan Macmillan Australia, July 2018) is the first of a young adult duology. Its sequel ROGUE will be released late June, 2019. A.J.’s bestselling third novel, ZAC & MIA, won the 2012 Text Prize, the 2014 SCBWI Crystal Kite Award, and the 2014 Ethel Turner prize for young adults at the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards. ZAC & MIA is available in 14 countries and was adapted for American television in 2017/18. Her earlier novels are WAVELENGTH and SHUTTERSPEED. In 2018, A.J. completed a PhD at ECU on the topic of wonder in literature. A J. is originally from Queensland but has lived in Perth since 2004.
